In many parts of the country the barn owl has become a “biological exterminator” thus earning its nickname “war machine” among nature photographers.  During the nesting season the barn owl hunts about 35 rodents / voles in one night. When venturing out to hunt, the barn owl flies low and almost soundlessly, and as such prevents the prey from hearing it approaching. In order to locate its prey, the barn owl uses its keen sense of hearing, which is even more important than its sense of sight. The position of the barn owl’s ear openings, like in many of the night raptors, is asymmetrical, the left ear opening slightly higher than the right ear, thus enabling the owl to come within the range of the prey and locate it acoustically.
